Hour of Darkness is the second book in Lara Adrian's Hunter Legacy series but these books have all specifically been written to work as standalone stories so you can read them in any order. If you did read Born of Darkness then you'll recognise Caine as the Breed Hunter who was working in the casino and who had made more than a few questionable choices before he came through and helped Asher and Naomi in the end. He's the only character we've met previously though and through him we get to meet Hour of Darkness is the second book in Lara Adrian's Hunter Legacy series but these books have all specifically been written to work as standalone stories so you can read them in any order. If you did read Born of Darkness then you'll recognise Caine as the Breed Hunter who was working in the casino and who had made more than a few questionable choices before he came through and helped Asher and Naomi in the end. He's the only character we've met previously though and through him we get to meet a whole new group of Gen One Breed males who survived the Hunter program. Caine has been living in Miami since leaving Las Vegas trying to decide what direction he wants his life to take now, he's not happy with the things he did for money recently and is trying to clear his head. He gets pulled into Marina's orbit when she is nearly assassinated right in front of him. Caine can't just sit back and watch her die but when he realises she's a Breedmate he knows he has to help her find safety. Marina's uncle is part of the Russian mafia but she has finally convinced him to change his ways and leave the criminal underworld behind him. She has travelled to America to bring valuable information to his contact and help buy their freedom. Unfortunately for her someone seems determined to stop her mission, and they don't care if murdering her is the only way to do it. Caine is the only person she can trust to help keep her safe but she's determined to do what she came to do and meet with her uncle's contact. I'm really enjoying the Hunter Legacy series, so far it's been great getting to meet some of the Hunters who were raised in a lab by a madman and I loved meeting Caine and the brothers who he is closest to. There is a small group of them who created a home and a family and although Caine has kept himself apart from them for the last few years they welcomed him back with open arms and made space for Marina in their little family. It kind of reminded me of the very early days of the Midnight Breed series when most of the members of the Order hadn't paired off yet and I'm really hoping that all of these characters are going to get books soon! The romance was just what I look for in a Lara Adrian book, Caine was tough as nails on the outside with a warm gooey centre, Marina was strong, confident and knew exactly what she wanted, they had brilliant chemistry from the beginning but their romance took time to develop and there was plenty of action too. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I have such bad memory at times that when I started reading this book I couldn't really remember much about the previous book in this spin off series.  What's great about Lara Adrian's writing is that she can deliver a fully standalone story even as it's part of a much bigger world.  So if you are just jumping into this series, feel free to do that I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. HOUR OF DARKNESS was engaging and action packed all the way through.  It's a fast paced read with great characters and explosive chemistry.  Not only the main protagonists but the whole group of Hunters in the Everglades.  I'm anxious to see more of them in the future books and get to see their HEAs.  But back to Cain and Marina.  They had great chemistry and while their love develops quite fast, it made sense for me as they are in very intense situations.  I never doubted their feelings and I also thought they were perfect together.  Cain still needed to heal from things in his past and that not only involved himself but the rest of his Hunter brothers.  I wanted to see a little more of that, but I still found what we got satisfying. Lara Adrian makes me fall in love with her worlds and characters every time, this was no different.  She manages to make each book interesting and different while having all the elements that I've come to expect in her writing.  To achieve that without feeling repetitive is no easy feat and I think she does that really well.  I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next! *ARC provided by publisher Reviewed by Francesca❤ ♡ Don't want to miss any of our posts? 4.5 stars! A fast-moving, exciting, suspenseful and romantic PNR read, I loved this one! This is the second book in the Hunter Legacy series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Cain was introduced in the first book of this series, Born of Darkness, but I honestly could not remember him at all, and I was able to pick up this story and get completely caught up in all of the action and excitement with no problems at all. Cain is a member of the Breed, a vampire known as a Hunter. Cruelly bred 4.5 stars! Cruelly bred in a laboratory to become a lethal, ruthless assassin, he was a prisoner until he and others of his kind were freed from their captivity around 20 years ago. He’s still finding his place in the world, and following a job in Las Vegas that went bad, he has escaped to Miami for some quiet time, but he ends up finding a whole lot of trouble. Marina is the niece of a Russian banker with ties to the mob. She has travelled to America from St Petersburg to bargain for a way out for the two of them, and she’s carrying a super-sensitive bargaining chip – one that has placed a huge target on her back. A fact that is proven when she is literally snatched from the path of a sniper’s bullet by a mysterious stranger. Though terrified and shaken, she’s immediately drawn to the gorgeous Breed male, but she won’t let anything interfere with her mission so she does her best to keep him out of her business. That’s fine with Cain, who wants nothing to do with her, but when he discovers that she is a Breedmate, one of the rare and chosen few females who are able to mate and produce children with a vampire, he feels honor-bound to protect her at all costs. And the stage is set for the adventure to come as, despite them both trying to keep their distance, Cain steps in to protect Marina from the multiple dangers that she’s facing. All of that complicated by their wild attraction that stirs all kinds of feelings that neither of them are prepared to deal with. “I wish I was the kind of male who could walk away from you. I wish like hell I had more honor, because despite the mark that should be enough to make me keep my distance – despite the fact that you’re withholding information that might get you killed on my watch - the only thing I can’t seem to do where you’re concerned is walk the fuck away.” I love these characters! Marina is a wonderfully strong heroine who is protective of her loved ones. She’s prepared to fight for what she wants, and I loved seeing her prove that over and over throughout the story. And Cain is a perfect blend of emotionally vulnerable alpha badass. His Breed ‘gift’ curses him with the foresight to see people’s deaths before they happen – just not anybody that he’s emotionally attached to, something that he learned the hard way. So though he wants Marina more than he’s wanted anything, in order to protect her, he knows he needs to keep his distance… but we all know how that’s going to go! She was extraordinary, and not only because she was the first woman – the only woman – who challenged him on every level. She made him crave something he’d never thought he could have. A partner. An equal. A future where he wasn’t alone. Fuck. He was in real trouble here. The mystery/suspense part of the storyline is fantastic, with twists and turns that keep things interesting and that lead to some great action and excitement! And, of course, there is the love story which is both gorgeous and sexy as all hell. There’s a strong emotional connection between Cain and Marina which develops really nicely as the story progresses, and I loved watching them fall and fall hard for each other. “I love you,” she whispered, moving deeper into his arms. “Please, don’t ever let me go.” He held her close. “Baby, not a chance.” We are introduced to Cain’s Hunter brothers, the only family he’s known, and OMG what a fantastic bunch! I love these boys, each so different with their own distinct personalities. I love seeing them all interact together, and I can only hope that we’ll get to revisit with them in this series. As always, Lara Adrian has delivered a solid read that kept me glued to my kindle from start to finish. It’s exciting and romantic, and full of the PNR action that I love about her books. I loved it. 4.5 stars. An Advanced Reader Copy was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book was pretty predictable with what I've come to expect from the Breed series and this spin off series. I gotta say I was quite disappointed with this one. First, I didn't like the hero, almost right from the start, and second the story line and the whole interaction felt predicted, you know this pattern and you've read it in too many PNR books. I don't read as many PNR as I used to these days, mostly stick to Contemporary so many that's part of my problem. Big-ass-bad-Vampire, moody, arrogant, killing-machine, alpha, aggressive, over-protective, knows what's best for the heroine. You've met "him" I gotta say I was quite disappointed with this one. You've met "him" SO MANY TIMES, especially with being hurt in the past so doesn't want to get near the female to protect his heart. I wish this was somehow different but it was SO Predictable I was just bored when I wasn't annoyed with his over bearing behavior. Marina Moretskova is the niece of a mob boss, or rather the one who enables one of the worst mob bosses in Russia (and outside of it). Finally accepting her request to leave this world he gives her an assignment to make them both free. Deliver money and a disc full of knowledge of the one he will need protecting from (once he's out) and so she flies to the USA to make the deal. Things don't turn out as she expected when she is almost killed TWICE and been betrayed in the process. Her savior is a Breed Male she have never even met before - Cain Hunter. She isn't a very trusting person and Cain is Breed and if there is one thing other than trust no one her uncle have always drilled into her is never trust these blood sucking monsters.. Yet he is the only one left standing so she goes with him... (and becomes his prisoner...) We've met Cain Hunter in the previous installment. He was the "bad guy" who made the right decision in the very end. Leaving Las Vegas to Miami was his way of turning a different page. When he sees a premonition (that's his breed ability) of a woman's death, one he was starting at swimming at the pool directly bellow him as he was standing in his hotel room's balcony he literally jumps to her rescue. He finds a very vibrant, strong willed woman who can handle herself VERY well, yet now she does need help and not even sure why he helps her out but once he sees she is a bridesmate the deal is done. As I've already described in the first paragraph the kind of Male he is, he basically made her his prisoner in his house, or rather the house he used to share with other Hunters who were rescued from the Hunter program 20 years ago. Being there brings up too many memories, ones he misses and others he wants to bury but his main problem is making sure Marina is safe and also trying to avoid her - her beautiful seductive body and strong willed personality he can't help but crave. I LOVED Marina, she was GREAT. What a woman, she was the perfect heroine. So full of life, and energy, she knew what she wanted and she was working her damn best to make it happen even if she had the annoying vampire imprisoning her and demanding total and absolute honestly which she had NO reason to give. They knew each other for a day, why would she trust him and especially when he was behaving like a jailer preventing her from leaving or making any act on her own. What's is it to him? He also had a VERY bad opinion of her uncle and couldn't hold his opinion to himself. He was all about CONTROLLING Marina. It was pretty disgusting. I didn't see why she was attracted to him AT ALL. Frankly, I expected to much more from Lara. More Reviews HERE

Not even Marina’s bodyguards are aware of her mission, so when an attempt on her life is averted by a handsome, steely-eyed vampire, as grateful as she is for Cain’s intervention, the last thing she needs is the shrewd Breed male nosing around for answers. With a target on her back and covert enemies closing in from all sides, trust is a risk that can prove deadly...and the safest shelter she may find is in the arms of the most lethal man she’ll ever know. Lara Adrian did it again, she wrote an exciting story about The Breedmate Marina and a Hunter named Cain. They met when Cain rescued her life and from that moment on their lives are somehow knit together, although Cain surely don’t want and need this kind of diversion in his life...he can’t escape it either. It is fabulous to read how Lara creates a atmosphere in which you truly feel for both characters and what they went through. Cain’s struggle to stay away, but can’t. His supporting brothers, the Darkhaven in the swamps, Marina’s loyalty towards her uncle...Lara made it all visible and almost movie-like. Ow do I wish these Hunter stories turned into a tv series...wouldn’t that be great! Personally I know a story is great when I’m holding my breath at some parts and talking to one of the characters about what to do or don’t do. That’s when they are started to be alive. I’m a big fan of all Lara’s books and Hour of Darkness didn’t disappoint me of course. It was a great read and I’m looking forward to Knox’s story and so many more Hunter’s stories.

This book was not as good as the previous one. It had some exciting moments and twists for sure but there was one thing lacking; captivating characters. One thing I am excited about is getting more JUSTIS. They seem like an intriguing organization.

This was a good read, but I wish it was a little longer! There was some action and mystery to enjoy, but the romance needed a little more space to develop. Cain and Marina’s relationship happened in a blink of an eye, but the sizzling emotional link from Breed mates happened way later than I was expecting, making it difficult to completely buy into the declarations of love.

Then there is a turn of events, where Marina finds herself in yet, more danger. It would appear that the true reason of her mission is not really a secret, but she would give her life to guard this secret. Once again, Cain comes to the rescue. At this point, she can choose to ignore her attraction to Cain or trust him to keep her safe. Despite Cain's quest for not to get involved with anyone after he blames himself for a tragic accident, he decides to see Marina to safety. Her safety isn't the only thing that he has in mind, but he decides to fight the feelings that she stirs in him. Getting close to anyone brings pain. Can he stick to his decision or will his urges get the better of him? I found this installment to be compelling and addictive. Marina discovers the truth behind her mission and she is heartbroken. The support she receives from Cain and his brothers is absolute. Their relationship is uncertain to begin with, but their strong feelings are indisputable. I was captivated by this well paced story, the well developed characters, and the strong plot. I look forward to reading the next installment in the series. I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

There was a whole lot to like about Cain and Marina’s story, Hour of Darkness, by Lara Adrian. The book follows Cain as he saves Marina from certain death and whisks her away to safety. Locked behind the walls of a Darkhaven that Cain was once a member of, Cain and Marina try to figure out who is behind her attacks and if she should finish out the mission her uncle (a member of the Russian Mob) sent her on here in the States. The feel of this book is more similar to the original Midnight Breed books than the reboot that began a few years ago. The Darkhaven setting, the interaction Marina had with the other Breed males and another Breedmate, and the story pacing transported me to the days where Lucan, Dante, Rio and others were all out on the streets kicking ass and taking names. As much as I liked the feel of this book, the romance between Cain and Marina just didn’t live up to my expectation. Beyond their physical chemistry nothing held these two together. The lack of an emotional connection led to the characters feeling one dimensional in terms of their relationship. Cain and Marina’s backstories didn’t have this same “flat” feeling, it was only in terms of who Cain and Marina were to each other and their future together so I’m not quite sure what happened here. My fingers are crossed that we’ll get to see more of this Darkhaven in the future. Adrian did leave a few loose ends out there at the conclusion of this book, so I hope we’ll return to this setting very soon. 3.5 stars for Hour of Darkness by Lara Adrian.

I fell in love with this author's Midnight Breed series. This spin off Hunter series gets better and better. Secrets that he's allowed to come between him and the only other people he's ever let himself care about. Too bad a sexy Russian woman is going to make not facing his past impossible. Marina knows what it's like to be completely alone. And she also knows what loss feels like. Through the fate of birth she's given a chance to show the one person she should be able to depend on just how loyal and faithful her love is. Too bad that person has no idea who he's dealing with. Cain is hard. And a little broken. My heart hurt for him every time he got angry to cover the confusion and fear. Those feelings were what made me fall for him. Marina is a strong, courageous woman. She had me at fighting to be free in a swimming pool. I also loved the way she had no fear of Cain. Standing up to a huge angry vampire...no problem for Marina. I felt her pain when she finally realized that what she was doing wasn't what she thought. I also cheered her on as she worked to make things right. Lara Adrain has created a world.full of beautifully broken vampire men. Men who struggle.to overcome their past. And women strong enough to help them do just that. I'm so.looking forward to more of The Hunter Legacy. Thank you Lara Adrian for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Lara Adrian is back with the second book in Hunter Legacy series with another pulse pounding ride that will leave you breathless, hot and with a hunger for more of this series. I don’t hide my love for this author and this is another example of why. Going into this book, I was already drawn to the hero Cain and with every action, I fell a little harder for the hunter warrior. You can’t help but fall for a tortured hero and especially when that hero shows a soft side when it comes to his family and his woman. Give him the perfect heroine in Marina who not only goes toe to toe with Cain at every opportunity but has to deal with more than she ever imagined while trying not to fall for the one person a Breed warrior, that she had been warned against all her life. Reading these two joining forces to keep Marina safe and alive while fighting the scorching chemistry that sparks to life whenever they are together and trying to unravel the horrific lies that are following Marina no matter where she goes is a rollercoaster ride that you will not want to put down for a moment. Seriously, just when you think you know what’s going on, the author throws another twist in and takes you on a new path and it will keep you holding your breath as you do so. I loved this aspect and could not turn the pages fast enough to find out what was next. I can’t wait for more in this series, especially after reading about Cain’s brothers who have me salivating already. Well played Lara Adrian well played indeed.

Exhilarating! Exactly what one would expect of a Lara Adrian novel, Hour of Darkness manages to be even more exciting than the one that came before it. Their novel progresses from here with each one sensing more to the other's stories than what is being readily revealed. As a daughter of the mafia, Marina has her secrets that she is keeping from Cain for his safety. We do discover that Marina is a Breedmate, and as such is an ideal match for Cain if his interest is there too. I loved the connection between the couple, the closeness that allowed each to show vulnerability while maintaining strength. Ms. Adrian is very adept at illustrating this connection, the level of passion was off-the-charts combustible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Ms. Adrian or is just looking to try one, you will not regret your decision.

Pageturner and a Heartbreaker!!! Omg, I don't know how she does it, but honest to God, her books just keep getting better and better with each one!! I think the reason they are so believable, so REAL, is because even though they are vampires, she writes them as real people you can relate to. This one in particular broke my heart for Marina, who loved her Uncle so completely, she didn't even see anything coming!! She trusted him implicitly. But, he was all she had, so................Yes, this book can absolutely be read as a standalone, but it's so much better if you know all the backstories. So I highly recommend you do yourselves a favor, and start at the beginning. I'm so glad I did. If you don't already love Lara Adrian's work, after your read just one of her many works, YOU WILL!!! TRUST ME, YOU WILL!!! HAPPY READING!!!! **sigh** now I have to wait for the next one. It's gonna kill me. I hope it's Knox, and he gets a second chance!!!!!! **sigh**

I absolutely loved this one! Lara Adrian, one of my all time favorite author's, has come out with the second installment to her Hunter Legacy series. Cain helps Marina walk along a dangerous ledge with the Russian Mafia. These two characters are great and the novel really starts to establish the main frame for the series. It felt very similar to the first book of the Midnight Breed series with the establishment of a compound. And there were similar parallels in character personalities to other Breed in the main series. You can tell Adrian is preparing for several more books to come and I can't wait to see what she does with this new concept and story line!

I loved reading this book, I was pleasantly surprised that it was about Cain. I might or might not have known it would be about him but since my brain is a bit fuzzy at times I assume I didn't know it would be him. I was enthralled reading Cain's origin and how Marina managed to break down this strong breedmale's walls. At the same time it was good to see that Marina wasn't the flailing damsel in distress like you read often (not that Lara has damsels in distress I think), and that she was a powerhouse on her own. That said, I have a feeling the next book will be about Knox and I can't wait to see what she has in story for him. I absolutely love the Midnight Breed series and this spinoff series has not disappointed. The story started off a little slow for me but soon picked up the pace and I was then riveted to it. Marina came across as really sharp and very serious about her mission to help her uncle. Her belief in him was her driving force. Lara Adrian has always been one of my all time favourite authors and nothing has changed, I can't see that ever changing. The Midnight Breed series is amazing, a series of sexy vampires and their Breed Mates and as the series progressed, the characters became a part of every page. When the Hunter Legacy began, I wondered if I'd like it as much as its predecessors and I have to happily say that it is just as good and a fantastic continuation. Being able to watch as the Hunters adapt and learn to establish friendships, companionships and even fall in love is truly amazing. The Hunters are special breed males and therefore deserve to find love. Cain and Marina's storyline is fantastic. It opens up an entire Russian world to its readers. Marina's upbringing makes her uniquely qualified to be Cain's mate provided they live long enough to figure it out. Lara has another amazing story for her readers. As always I can't wait to see what is next.
